For Sale! Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest Elizabeth Swann Necklace Replica

Product Information
Replica of the pirate coin necklace worn by the Elizabeth Swann character in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Cast metal coin with antiqued gold tone plating, worn on a gold tone necklace chain.
Representation of the missing piece of a cursed Aztec treasure, and the mark of a true pirate.
Packaged in a display ready blister pack.
Item Size: 1.5" x 1.5" x .25"

Prop Story
Deep in a mysterious cavern stands an ancient chest filled with Aztec coins and guarded by pirates who are doomed to wander the seven seas as ghosts, until all 882 pieces have been returned. They have found 881. The last one hangs as a medallion around the neck of Elizabeth Swann. As a girl she took it from young Will Turner to keep him from being marked as a pirate. As a young woman, the medallion carries her into an adventure beyond her wildest dreams.

During the 18th century, the Caribbean, also called "The Spanish Main" was known as the "Treasure House of the World" because all the wealth of Spain's New World colonies was shipped across its waters. It's easy to imagine coins minted from the gold Cortez stole from the Aztecs civilization falling into pirate hands and becoming the stuff of which legends are made.

Master Replicas is proud to offer this authentic prop replica of Elizabeth Swann's gold medallion as part of the Walt Disney Showcase Collection. Is it truly the missing piece of the cursed Aztec treasure? And if so - what adventures await you the moment you put it on?

High Culture And The Caribbean

The term 'high culture' seems to automatically suggest elitism and superiority. However, like many other phrases used in the English language, that term is used in a variety of ways. At one extreme, it is perceived as elitist; the preferences and tastes of those who presume to be in the upper-stratum of society. Another aspect of it is that it is the set of cultural products that define a culture or one that - though not necessarily popular - is held in high esteem.

The Caribbean - as every other region is the New World - was once under the colonial rule of European masters. The different groups that were brought to the Caribbean were then incorporated into the culture of the colonial masters to a greater or lesser extent. As a result of this, the usage of 'high culture' in this article refers to the Caribbean derivatives of the culture of colonial rulers. As a tourist-oriented region, 'high culture' has had a very significant socio-economic impact.

Carnival

Carnival is an institution, particularly in the Eastern Caribbean. The concept would seem like 'popular culture', but it was really derived from 'high culture' - specifically the French 'masquerade' tradition. It is important to note that modern Caribbean Carnivals contain elements of both popular and high culture. It is known that a number of people involved in Carnival - designers especially- come from the upper stratum of Caribbean society.

The origin of Carnival in the Caribbean is the mimicking of the tradition of the ruling elite in the days of slavery. Carnival - in its highest form - is also considered to be representative of Caribbean history and eclectic influences. There are Carnival shows, like the 'Dimanche Gras', that are designed specifically to showcase the creative talents of costume designers who are artists in their own right.

Music

It may seem strange, but music contains an influence of 'high culture' in the Caribbean. The type of music that I refer to is not 'ragga music' or music with mass appeal. In the Caribbean- particularly in colonial times- the classical music of the UK and parts of Europe were held in high esteem in the Caribbean.
There are classical choirs in the Caribbean even today. What is even more important is that those who had been schooled in 'high culture' have been inspired to customise it to the myriad Caribbean cultures. For instance, the concept of the "folk choir" was pioneered by those who felt that the 'high culture' of the European could be adapted to the indigenous form.

The steel pan - the versatile instrument of Trinidadian origin - has emerged from being marginalised as 'riff-raff' culture. That stigma was reduced by the official identification of the steel pan as a national instrument. Today, apart from the ordinary steel bands, there are now several 'steel orchestras'. Steel orchestras have changed the view of the steel pan as the musical instrument of the riff-raff, to an instrument for refined music connoisseur.

Literature and art

Literature and art are not necessarily very popular in the Caribbean, but are held in high esteem. There is a distinct Caribbean identity in paintings and literature. Involvement in artistry has diffused from the upper-stratum of Caribbean society to the lower ones. In addition, production of art and artefacts created a body of craftsmen within the region. Much of their business is generated from souvenir sales.

Caribbean literature - through exponents like V.S. Naipaul, Samuel Selvon and Derek Walcott- has defined the Caribbean identity to the world. The impact of it has been primarily social. It has allowed West Indian students to learn about themselves and examine the societies in which they live. It is very important to acknowledge that this sphere of Caribbean 'high culture' is dominated by the English-speaking Caribbean- demonstrating the influence of British rule on the Caribbean identity.

The impact of 'high culture' on the Caribbean is generally a legacy of the colonial era. The fact that the culture of the colonial masters and ruling elites have been both adopted and adapted to the Caribbean has made the greatest impact. Uniquely, there is a thin line between Caribbean 'high culture' and 'mass culture' in some instances.

In any event, the impact of high culture on the Caribbean is both social and economic. It has helped shaped the Caribbean identity. The adaptation of 'high culture' in the Caribbean has played a major role in tourism. The Caribbean is not marketed as an idyllic getaway alone, but a region rich in culture and cultural expression. The symbiotic relationship between high culture and mass culture in the Caribbean and its economic permutations, are what makes 'high culture' even more influential in the isles of the West Indies.

Factors That Negatively Affect Caribbean Development

The Caribbean is considered a Third-World region or a collection of Less Developed Nations. In broad terms, development can be viewed in social, economic and political dimensions. Every region has development issues to routinely overcome. The Caribbean region has obstacles to development that are peculiar to the region. These issues are of a cultural, economic, geographic and social nature.

1) Small markets

The population of the states associated with CARICOM is between 6 and 7 million. The Caribbean market is a small one even if you include non-English speaking territories. This fact reduces the market potential for conglomerates and limits the emergence of dominant Caribbean enterprises. Even indigenous large business entities in the Caribbean face constraints of growth and expansion.

2) Resource-dependent and tourism based economies

Caribbean economies are highly dependent on both tourism and natural resource-exploitation. This makes the Caribbean region more vulnerable to economic downturns in more developed nations. While this is the norm in the interconnected global market, the Caribbean economies are hardly self-sufficient- relying on imports for necessitates. Regional governments seem content with using what they are lucky to have instead of developing other sectors and creating more tradable goods.

3) Retrograde education system

Under colonial rule, the education system was designed to meet the needs of colonial masters. They were geared towards getting people to sustain the "plantation economy" and serve the public sector. The education system hasn't changed much since colonial times and fails to produce enough citizens who are innovative and entrepreneurial. The static education system is one of the reasons for the perceived 'culture of dependency'.

4) Exploitation and division under colonial rule

The Caribbean's resources were pillaged during the colonial era. Once the colonial powers had their fill, they left. Further to that, they created division among different groups within the region as part of the 'divide and conquer' principle. While they left the Caribbean with a model of civilization, they really were not interested in ensuring the development of the nations of the West Indies outside of their self-interest.

5) Climactic factors - hurricanes

The Caribbean is right in the middle of the hurricane belt. Islands across the archipelago have been devastated by hurricanes and setback by tropical storms. The recurrent infrastructural damage places a real burden on both economic and social development.

6) Political fragmentation

From 1958 to 1962, a Caribbean federation was in existence. The idea was that the islands under British rule would form a single political unit. However, insularity and parochial considerations took root and the federation dissolved- after just four years. This political setback further stymied the economic and social integration of the small Caribbean islands. Even current attempts to unify politically and economically are futile or protracted.

7) Migration of skilled workers and professionals

Many West Indians- skilled or unskilled- leave these shores to head for the more developed countries of North America or Europe. The problem is that the best and the brightest of the Caribbean are highly likely to migrate, or study abroad and remain there. This phenomenon- known as 'brain drain'- effectively deprives the Caribbean of its best technocrats, intellectuals, skilled workers and professionals.

8) Lack of meritocracy

In a small place, it is very difficult to be unknown. Unfortunately, the culture of the Caribbean is not one that emphasises achievement based on merit. While the idea of complete meritocracy is an ideal, it is at least implemented to a greater or lesser extent in other cultures. Cronyism and nepotism hinder political and economic development since the best-qualified do not hold the positions that they merit.

9) Crime

Some countries in the Caribbean have the highest crime rates in the world. This is a result of myriad factors- including the illegal drugs and firearms trade that uses the Caribbean as a handy trans-shipment point. Crime affects tourism and direct foreign investment. It also changes the way of life for large sections of the Caribbean population.

There are indeed several factors that hinder Caribbean development. Arguably the most significant of those would be the cultural or economic. Little can be done about natural disasters or the remnant colonial fetters of the region. What is important to note is that the Caribbean territories are young independent nations that are still finding their feet. Encouragingly, overcoming the factors that negatively impact Caribbean development is not impossible- albeit difficult.

Club Med Turkoise

I went to Club Med Turkoise in Providenciales, the Turks and Caicos Islands in January 2010 as a solo traveller for a long weekend.

Upon arrival at the resort I was gratefully received by staff and I walked into my room and taking into account summary of logistics resort along the way.The reasons are clean and the views of the beach were sorprendentes.Turcos has calm water I have ever seen in my life.

I thought that the room was nice enough to the limited amount of time he was planning to go there (shower / sleeping). It can walk the entire length of the resort in 5-7 minutes in the path or the beach. Houses D and E are near Sharkie (the bar/grill), the candle hut and close enough to the circus and tennis courts.A and B housing is closer to the basketball courts and the hut, buceo.La room cleaned all day which was particularly important as the floors with really Sandy. In addition, they say don't let your towels of beach in her bed to avoid any arenas bugs.

Took many activities all included including Zumba classes, sailing, diving, kayaking and the circus. The snorkeling trip was a pleasant surprise included. We were out for about 2 hours on a boat which leaves right from the resort. There is no extra charge for this trip. I did a kayak excursion on big blue have conveniently located opposite the reception in Turkoise Office. Be sure to ask if there are any special because I got a discount of $ 20 in ecological kayak tour for the day I wanted to go. They collected right at the resort and it will take back and forth to the Navy.Very convenient. Club Meds usually daily hours post so you can pick and choose the activities you want to participate in. It made me think of sleepaway camp for adults. There is much to be done.

Already I was traveling alone to the resort, I was a little nervous would be isolated but the friendly staff put me at ease. It was usually seated dinner with other members of staff or guests. Everyone was so friendly. By the second day, I felt like I knew at least 15 officials that everyone greeted me at a base name. Circus staff was impressive. The waiters were friendly but during certain peak hours (Saturday evening) would have been better to have more than they work the bar in the Plaza of the pueblo.Los shows during the night were caseosa but fun.Usually made some group dance before spectacle, then a show with a theme in particular, then open the nightclub. You can be hard if you want to match, or you can head back to the room.Couldn't hear music club or entertainment from my room when return headed a night early.

In general, this trip I had a good rato.Recomiendo travelers as soloists, in output side and willing to participate in events with strangers at the end of the trip, will have a lot of new friends who are guests and personal.definitivamente would go back alone or with friends.

Excellence Resort Punta Cana

2 2 TravBuddies found this review useful/trust adults, inclusive Resort on the beach on June 21, 2008 While looking for a resort in Punta Cana, is important to know what you want. We were looking for a fabulous, all included, clean, adults only, quiet resort and found him! Many stations, we learned, "top up" each other, not of excellence, you set the date out of town and away from the family more friendly resorts.

Excellence has a very "European" aspect to it. Meals are generally taken later, it is quiet and comfortable and it was very busy.Because its adults just don't be surprised if you see a few women venturing Beach topless or Torres itty.Las swimming swimwear men were clean, fresh and relaxed.

There were several restaurants to choose, and although not all of them are always open every evening there are several options.

Don't forget to stop and see the birds!Parrots colorful, flamenco and turkeys actual visible in soils, as well as various flowers, birds, turtles and fish (including a coy pond!).

Beverages, food, room service and several activities are included, but not forge suggestion, bring lots of small bills don't be surprised if you believe that driver being taken away, the resource is not close to any others - and is wonderful!

For Sale! Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

The music for this third chapter in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is a traditional, efficient action score that, due to the film's setting, occasionally incorporates light Asian touches. The popularity of Hans "Long John" Zimmer (all the credits in the CD's liner notes include pirate-themed nicknames, like the roll call in a Simpsons Halloween episode) isn't in doubt--he sure is one in-demand composer--but afficionados are divided about his artistic worth, and this score isn't about to reconcile them. Some think that Zimmer relies too much on his stable of composers and sticks to tried-and-true recipes; others admire his capacity to weave themes in and out of cues, creating a whole made of subtly interrelated parts. At World's End feeds both camps: Seven of his collaborators are credited with writing "additional music," and the album feels by-the-numbers at times; but those inclined to listen very closely will be rewarded by the way Zimmer sneaks in bits of two main melodies (especially variations on the first track, a pirate theme titled "Hoist the Colours" and cowritten by director Gore Verbinski) throughout. The use of electronics is so light as to be almost undetectable, which will please fans of a more organic orchestral sound. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

For Sale! Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl [VHS]

You won't need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, especially if you've experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There's a galleon's worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp's androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter) on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he's made Pirates into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. Aye, matey, we've come a long way since Jason and the Argonauts! --Jeff Shannon

For Sale! White Squall

It's a pity this oceangoing adventure wasn't fully appreciated during its theatrical release in 1996, if only because its climactic storm sequence (hence the movie's title) was awesome on the big screen and inevitably less impressive on video. Mixed reviews also curtailed its box-office potential, but as you might expect from Ridley Scott--the director of Blade Runner and Thelma & Louise--this is a beautifully photographed movie that will thrill anyone who is drawn to the romance and danger of the open sea. The story is a rite-of-passage adventure for a group of high school boys who spend their senior year as the crew-in-training on the Albatross, a sailing vessel skippered by an experienced sailor and schoolmaster (Jeff Bridges) who teaches hard lessons of teamwork and individual responsibility. As they sail to the tip of South America and back, the young men face many challenges that will shape their character, in addition to the carnal pleasures of shore leave in exotic ports of call. It's a traditional story, and Scott doesn't bring anything particularly new to this sailboat variation of Dead Poets Society and Scent of a Woman. But as a coming-of-age drama White Squall is professionally crafted and filled with vital energy, featuring a talented cast of newcomers (led by Scott Wolf of TV's Party of Five) who rise to the demands of this rousing and life-changing adventure. --Jeff Shannon
